15, 2013 with prize fund of at least $10,000.
This World GAYP Qualifier (WCDF) WQT event will be held in Barbados, October 5 - October 15, 2013 with prize fund of at least $10,000. More details later on their website.
World Qualifier (Barbados) as originally being September 29 to Oct. 5, 2013. The dates of the GAYP World Qualifier have since shifted to October 5-14. Rich Beckwith, WCDF (World Checkers Draughts Federation) President spoke directly to Barbados this week (July 3rd). These dates also include a section for youth (age 18 cutoff) and GAYP woman’s championship. Additionally the draughts festival will host a USA-Barbados international match and some 100-square and Russian-64 draughts. The schedule is still being worked out, but the qualifier may tentatively play toward the end of that date range with prize fund in excess of $10,000. Barbados will release an internet site soon with more details. Associations in good standing with WCDF ($100 or 75 euro annual affiliation) are permitted to nominate 2 players to the qualifier (plus up to 2 woman and 2 youth) to WCDF secretary, John Reade at sue.reade@uwclub.net. The 79th Illinois 101 Counties Open Ty
(
Usually scheduled 1st weekend in October )
will be held in Illinois Centre Mall Food
Court on October 5th & 6th, 2013 (map)
The 79th Illinois 101 Counties Open Ty will be held October 5th - 6th, 2013, in mall in Marion, IL at the Illinois Centre Mall Food Court. (map) and sponsored by the Illinois State Checker Association. ~~~ Notice this is Saturday and Sunday ~~~
Usually held on 1st Saturday & Sunday in October according to Gene Ellison. Illinois has 102 counties but since Cook County was the Chicago area, with so many strong players they dominated the state checker tournaments and won most everything. Therefore the down state started their own tournament with the other 101 counties, excluding Cook Co., and hence the name “101 Tournament.” The early 70's the tournament was open to all players.
The Illinois Centre Mall is located west of the intersection
of Interstate I-57 and IL State Highway 13 (Exit 54B). Travel west on IL 13,
about a ½ mile to enter the mall. The mall is located at the third stop light
west of the interstate exit. Turn right at this third light and to the back of
the mall toward the Target parking lot. Park in the lot before Target and the
door will lead to the food court where we will be playing. The food court
entrance is on the north side.
A recommended hotel is the Super 8 Model at 2601 De Young, Marion, IL 62959,
phone 618-993-5577. Please indicate that you are there for the tournament to
receive a room discount for checker players of $45.00 (single & double) plus
tax. (Normal rate is $65 to $75). The Super 8 is located off the first light
west of the Interstate.
Registration on Saturday begins at 8:00 a.m. with play beginning after a 9:00 a.m. business meeting. There will be four rounds on Saturday and 3 rounds on Sunday; 3-move restriction with pair by a modified Swiss system. Entry fee is $10.00. Please join us for a great time playing checkers.
Here is information for the GPS traveler: Illinois Centre Mall 3000 West Deyoung St # 604, Marion, IL 62959 (618) 993-5436

2013 ACF GAYP Open National Checker Tournament -
"Carl Reno Tournament Honoree"The Holiday Inn I-275 North, in Cincinnati, OH 45241 (http://www.hicincy.com)
513-563-8330, submitted a fantastic bid, with a room rate of $71/night (plus
tax), a free hot breakfast buffet every morning of the tournament, and a free
playing room. To get those benefits, we need to guarantee them a certain amount
of business, so we're asking all tournament players to stay there for the
duration of the event. I toured the hotel last October, and it's really a nice
place-- new furniture, good amenities, lots of free parking, and nearby to lots
of restaurants and shopping. We'll also be a short drive away from downtown
Cincinnati, and about 20 minutes away from the airport. I'll be updating
acfnationals.com in the next couple weeks with a registration form and more
information, so keep an eye out!
Meanwhile, I'm asking for your help to make this an attractive event for a range
of players, especially since we had very low attendance at the last GAYP
Nationals. My fundraising goal is $1500, and I'll start us off with a $100
pledge. Anyone who gives $20 or more will receive a copy of annotated Selected
Games from the tournament, when they're ready. I know money is tight for a lot
of us, with prices going up and a lot of paychecks going down. But I've also
seen checker players give generously, not because we expect to win the money
back, but because we want to keep the game alive for new players and for the
next generation.
Carl Reno, our tournament honoree, really embodies that generosity: not only has
he given sixty years of his life to nurturing and improving tournament checkers,
but he also has helped revitalize GAYP through his book The Work of the Pentium.
To honor his commitment, we'll be selling copies of Carl's book at the
tournament, and he's generously agreed to donate all proceeds to the ACF Dream
Young Youth Checkers Fund. Books will be $20 each, and you can pre-order a copy
when you send in your tournament registration.
I hope you'll join me in Cincinnati, and that you'll consider a donation to the
prize fund as well. I'm working on a streamlined online donation system, but for
now you can email your pledges to me at acker.jt@gmail.com, or donate directly
via the ACF Store. Feel free to email or call me (217-778-3451) with any
questions. Thanks! Sincerely, John Acker - Tournament Director

They are planning to have a “free-for-all” checker day at the Lexington Senior Center on Friday, February 1st, 2013 ( 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), If you plan to attend, let Leon know by January 20. Leon Creek (phone 859-269-1292); email: Slcreek@windstream.net Lexington Senior Center, 1530 Nicholasville Road, Lexington, KY 40503. (map) We had five players to attend our December session and hope it will grow into a good group of players who enjoy playing checkers and want to improve on their checker skills. We are scheduling these meetings for every other month and perhaps monthly if we find enough players and interest. The February 1st meeting was cancelled because of snow - rescheduled February 11th (good group of 9 players). They have scheduled their April meeting just after the Illinois Open, you should confirm the date by contacting Leon. They now have nine players who are interested in supporting this Kentucky checker group effort, so if you are near by or in this area please get involved. RESULTS
